DRAG AND DROP -- If you drag a file onto the Split & Join application, Split & Join will launch, if it is not already running, and then process the file. If the file is a segment file, then it will be treated as though you had selected it using the ÔJoinÉÕ menu item. If the file is not a segment file, then it will be treated as though you had selected it using the ÔSplitÉÕ menu item.
If you drag several files onto the Split & Join application, then each file will be processed, in the order in which they were selected in the Finder. In addition, segments from the same file
will be processed as a group, as explained below.
BATCH PROCESSING -- If you drag several segments of the same file onto the Split & Join application, then Split & Join will use the files you have selected before requesting other segments.
For example, suppose that you drag the files ÔMy Picture.001Õ,
ÔMy Picture.002Õ, and ÔMy Picture.003Õ onto the Split & Join application. After you are asked to save the file, probably as ÔMy PictureÕ, Split & Join will process all three of the segments which were dragged onto the application. If there are other segments for ÔMy PictureÕ, then they will be requested. If not, then processing is completed.
System 6.0 users will only be able to use this feature if Split & Join is not already running. If Split & Join is running, then only one file at a time may be dragged onto the Split & Join application. This is a limitation of MultiFinder 6.0.
FILE FILTERING -- When you select the ÔJoinÉÕ menu item, only segment files will be shown to you. When another segment of the same file is requested, only other segments of the same file are shown.
For example, if you select ÔMy Picture.001Õ, you may be asked to save the joined file as ÔMy PictureÕ. Then, in succession, you will be asked to find the segments ÔMy Picture.002Õ, ÔMy Picture.003Õ,
and so on, until all segments have been processed. With file filtering, only these files (and all folders) will be shown.
Note that when ÔMy Picture.002Õ is requested, you may select any of the remaining segments. The segment you select will be processed, and then ÔMy Picture.002Õ will be requested again. The segment requested is always the lowest numbered segment which has not been processed.
FILE TYPE -- After a segment file has been processed once, its icon in the Finder will be that of a segment file. Also, if you wish to use the segment again, you may open it directly from the Finder (for example, by double-clicking), rather than using the ÔJoinÉÕ menu item, or dragging the file onto the Split & Join application.
COMPATABILITY -- Split & Join has been tested under System 6.0
and System 7.0. Although some convenience features are available only under System 7.0, Split & Join is fully functional under System 6.0, and under earlier systems dating back to System 3.2 and Finder 5.3. Split & Join requires at least a Macintosh 512KE.
